Farm.

As time went on and farms got a bit more successful and their families began to grow, a natural step was to add on to the homestead.  Often times, additions were just put on.  There were times and people who would try to keep the integrity of the original structure.  More often than not, however, things were put up out of need with whatever was around.  Farming is generally a frugal lifestyle after all.

It was not unheard for children and even generations beyond that to add new shelters to the properties.  Creating a sort of family farm neighborhood.  Almost like a compound.  Everyone would help everyone watch each others children while the rest would tend to the land.

A trend that has been gaining popularity for some time now is the building of farmhouses on residential properties.  You will even see “farmer’s porches” on houses that don’t even resemble what farmhouses used to be.
