.........Strictly speaking, none of this has much to dowith my designated area of professionalexpertise, which could reasonably be defined aswriting about the stuff that people seek out toescape such worries and anxieties.

 

 Serious artand popular entertainment, in their diverse ways,offer refuge and distraction.

 Their pleasures andcomforts are not trivial, but essential.

 Art is thedomain of solved problems, even if the problemsare formal and the solutions artificial.

 

 But if art, ideally, floats free of the grim reality ofwork, need and sustenance, that reality isnonetheless its raw material and its context.

Intentionally or not, artists in every form and styledraw on and refashion the facts of life thatsurround them, and the resulting work takes itsplace among those facts.

 What I’m grandly andabstractly calling “works of art” are moreconcretely and prosaically books, songs, movies,plays, television series, environmentalinstallations, paintings, operas and anything elsethat falls into the bin of consumer goods marked“Culture.”

 

 These goods are bought and sold,whether as physical objects, ephemeral real-timeexperiences or digital artifacts.

 Their makingrequires labor, capital and a market fordistribution.

 

 The money might come fromfoundations, Kickstarter campaigns or retail salesor advertising revenue.

 The commerce betweenartist and public is brokered by the traditionalculture industry (publishing houses, televisionnetworks, record labels and movie studios) andalso by disruptive upstarts like Amazon, Netflix,Google and iTunes.

 But the whole system, fromtop to bottom, from the Metropolitan OperaHouse to the busker in the subway station belowit, is inescapably part of the capitalist econom

 
And that economy, in turn, provides an endlessstream of subject matter.

 Much as I respect theefforts of economists and social scientists toexplain the world and the intermittent efforts ofpoliticians to change it, I trust artists and writersmo.
