Types of Alarm on Ship

An emergency does not come with an alarm butan alarm can definitely help us to tackle anemergency or to avoid an emergency situationefficiently 

and in the right way. Alarm systems areinstalled all over the ship’s systems andmachinery to notify the crew on board about thedangerous situation that 

can arise on the ship. Alarm on board ships are audible as well as visualto ensure that a person can at least listen to theaudible alarm when working in an area whereseeing a visual alarm is not possible and viceversa.

 

 It is a normal practice in the internationalmaritime industry to have alarm signal for aparticular warning similar in all the ships, nomatter in which seas

 they are sailing or to whichcompany they belongs to.

 

 This commonnessclearly helps the seafarer to know andunderstand the type of warning or emergencywell and help to tackle the situation faster.

 

 The main alarms that are installed in the ship togive audio-visual warnings are as follows:

 

 1)General Alarm: The general alarm on the ship isrecognized by 7 short ringing of bell followed by along ring or 7 short blasts on the ship’s hornfollowed 

by one long blast. The general alarm issounded to make aware the crew on board thatan emergency has occurred.

 

2) Fire Alarm: A fire alarm is sounded ascontinuous ringing of ship’s electrical bell orcontinuous sounding of ship’s horn.

 

 

 3) Man Overboard Alarm: When a man fallsoverboard, the ship internal alarm bell sounds 3long rings and ship whistle will blow 3 long blaststo notify 

the crew on board and the other ships innearby vicinity.

 

 

 4)Navigational Alarm: In the navigation bridge,most of the navigational equipments andnavigation lights are fitted with failure alarm.
