Frozen Rivers

 

 

What would happen if all of the rivers in the USwere instantly frozen in the middle of thesummer?

 For starters, pretty much every animal in thewater would die.

 

 This would wipe out several fishspecies completely (this site lists a number ofspecies found only in the Mississippi and itstributaries) and seriously damage many

 others. Then all the ice would start to melt.

 

 Melting icetakes a lot of heat energy, but the ice in thisscenario would be spread out in thin strandsacross the country, so it would all melt pretty fast.

 This would cause some localized cooling of theair, but we're talking about a relatively smallamount of heat energy compared to theenvironment's overall energy 

budget.

 We can use data on iceberg melt rates toestimate how quickly individual rivers would melt.

Small streams would melt in days in all but thecoldest areas, while ice in larger rivers would takelonger.

 

 But before that could happen, things would getweird.

 To help me out with this question, I talked toCharlie Hohn, a Vermont field naturalist with aninterest in river behavior.

 I brought Zoe'squestion to him, and he made a lot of interestingobservations.

 

 He pointed out that the water feeding into therivers — from tiny rivulets and raindrops andmelting snow all over the watershed — wouldsuddenly find its path

 blocked by a wall of ice.
