 What was the aim of Magellan's voyage? 

 

Magellan lived from 1480 till 1521.

 

 The first voyageround the world was made by him over 400 yearsago.

 

 He thought that by going west he couldtravel by sea round the world and come to thesame place again. 

 

 In those early days manypeople in Europe were interested in India.

 

 Theyknew it was a very rich country whose culture wasolder than theirs.

 

 Magellan wanted to find a newway to India.

 

 His country, Potugal, did not helphim, but he got money, ships, and all thingsnecessary for the voyage from Spain.

 At last thegreat day came and the voyage began.

 

 That wasin September of 1519.

 

 Some people thought thatnothing would come of it, that Magellan and hismen would get lost and never come home again;

 

others were sure that the whole thing would be asuccess.

 

 Who would be right, it was difficult to sayat the moment.
